Untited Nude [2014 - TBR1] - How It Was :)

Description

So this isn't really tutorial or a how to, more of a how it was done, but that's just as good as a hint or a tip and I don't really know where else to put it. Why, well to my surprise I never really thought I'd get a DD but I did and Untited Nude [2014 - TBR1] was what got it so I decided to put this to show just exactly what was going on, and in the hope (more than anything else) that it might serve to show or help those starting out with Photography and Flash Work, that you don't need a studio or expensive gear.

I know, I should have put this bit on the image too, but hey ho! Ces't la Vie.

The idea was simple, (in part ground work for another project) to practice Flash Work and to produce some simple, muted, bright, well keyed but even images with a strong or blown-out' back light. And as you can see, it's pretty easy to do.

*So long as your subject is between your two light sources.
*The back source is always best bounce off something neutral and matt (in this case a wall). -Take a couple test shots of just the wall, what you should aim for is a perfectly uniform white / blank looking image.-
*Your subject should then be in front of the back source but far enough to not lose the 'halo' effect of the back light or close enough to 'catch the light' and cast a shadow.
*The front source is best camera mounted or in line with the camera aiming head on and set to a much lower power. The front light is really just there to prevent silhouetting in the centre of the subject and pick out details. The more control the flash offers over power output and spread the better.
*Keep the ISO below 200 to hold detail and stop grain and but not so low as to create expose time of longer than half a second as this will cause problems balancing the exposure in most not pro and pro-am cameras and may also create difficulties for your model too (if you're using one). It's never a subject's/model's role to suffer for your art!
*You can also use (if you want to) DoF you exaggerate the effect and/or the effect to exaggerate DoF, and mid range telephoto lenses to push the DoF further if you want. Lenses designed for 35mm used APS-C and Half-Frame sensors can also help with this. But don't go too long or you'll find you're having to move too far from your subject and the lovely controlled lighting zone you've created especially if your front source is camera mounted.
*Use a remote release!!!!
*And FYI, this is a great technique for portraiture too :)

I hope this helps some one somehow and have fun ;)

Dan.
